Work with messages

Reply, edit, attach files and forward a message without losing its context.

What you'll have

A reply or forwarded message reaches the intended conversation with its context.

  1. If you need an older message, use Search this channel and enter a distinctive phrase. Open the matching result before replying or forwarding.

Result Search results identify matching messages you can open in context.

  2. Open a channel. Open the message’s thread control to reply to that message.

Result The reply panel shows the parent message and its replies.

  3. Write in the thread’s composer and send the reply. Check the destination before sending an uploaded file or a sensitive detail.

Result Your reply appears in the thread, under its parent message.

  4. To include a file, choose Attach a file in the composer. Wait for the upload to finish before sending. Retry an interrupted upload if the control offers it.

Result The draft shows the uploaded file's upload state.

  5. To correct your own message, open its menu and choose the edit action. Save the change. Cancel the edit to keep the saved version.

Result The message reflects the edit after the application accepts it.

  6. Use the message’s reaction control to choose an emoji. Select your reaction again to remove it. A reaction is not confirmation that somebody read a message.

Result The message shows your selected emoji reaction.

  7. When follow-up needs an issue, choose Create issue from message from the message menu. Review the title and fields, then create the issue. If the message already has an issue, open that issue instead of creating a duplicate.

Result The issue editor opens with the message as its source.

  8. To share a message elsewhere, choose Forward… from its menu. Search for the destination and select it. Read any warning about access to the original.

Result The picker shows selected destinations and any audience warning.

  9. Add a comment if needed, then choose Forward. Check individual failures before retrying a destination.

Result A notice identifies the destinations that received the message.

  10. If this doesn't work

Cancel forwarding if the audience is wrong. If you cannot post to a destination, ask a channel manager about access. Do not paste restricted content into a wider channel to bypass an access warning. If an uploaded file fails, keep the draft and use its retry or remove action before sending again.

The reply stays with its thread. A forwarded message appears only at the destinations that accepted it.
